PRIVATE LESSONS  ♦  GIRL SCOUTS BADGE  ♦  TEAM BUILDING ♦  outreach

The Austin Book Arts Center is perfect for group activities! We can offer any regularly-scheduled workshop for a group of four or more. Check here for workshops that are currently scheduled.

For more information, or to schedule a private workshop, please send an email to education@atxbookarts.org.

PRIVATE LESSONS

We can also work with you to design a personalized workshop, or one-on-one instruction, in book repair, bookbinding, letterpress printing, paper making, and other related book arts. Here are just a few examples of projects, perfect for one-on-one instruction:

  • Repair a treasured book.
  • Create a family heirloom album.
  • Bind your poems, photos, or manuscript.
  • Print your own invitations, business cards, or other project.
  • Create a keepsake for birth, wedding, retirement, or other life event.
  • Any other project?

Private instruction is $50/hr, three hour minimum. Student is responsible for the cost of all materials.

GIRL SCOUT BADGE

Is your troop interested in completing the Cadette Scout Book Arts Badge. ABAC will provide guidance about possible projects. Guided by the leader, the scouts chose the projects to complete. To complete the badge, some projects may be done independently and some will be completed at the ABAC Studio.

ABAC charges $25 per Girl Scout, minimum 5 students, for a 3-hr class. This includes basic materials.

CORPORATE GROUPS/TEAM BUILDING

Have fun and let loose with book arts! We could do a notebook, a sketchbook, or a photo album in a 3-hr workshop. How about a letterpress workshop? Your team  could expect to complete an edition of a poster, collaboratively designed and printed, using wood and metal type. We could come to you, or meet us at the Studio. Food and drinks are encouraged!

A 3-hr workshop is $30/person, up to 19 students. The cost goes down to $25/person with a minimum of 20 students. In most cases, materials are included.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

These programs are appropriate for school and community groups. Pre-structured, age-appropriate programs to be held at ABAC, offsite, or online. See list below of possible workshops below, though we can work with your group to accommodate a multitude of book arts activities!

Student tuition: $20/student, minimum of 10, up to 19; $15/student, minimum of 20 students. At least 1 teacher or guardian must be present per 10 students. This includes basic materials. We are best prepared to work with students who are at least pre-teens.

POSSIBLE OUTREACH WORKSHOPS

Datebook/Notebook structure: Learn some basic bookbinding skills with this small album structure, consisting of 5 sections easily sewn using the basic pamphlet stitch. The class will be furnished with the kit, including pre-cut boards and a pre-printed datebook text block. Students also have the option to bind their notebooks with blank pages or graph paper provided. Basics, such as grain direction, folding and sewing signatures, and “casing-in” will be covered. Students will personalize their notebooks with cloth and decorative paper.

Accordion Sketchbook: Learn some basic bookbinding skills in this 3-hr workshop. Students will create a hard-cover book with pages of watercolor paper. It is an accordion fold construction, so the book opens wide and the pages lay flat, perfect for sketching or using pastels or watercolor.

Screw Post Photo Album: Learn some basic bookbinding skills by creating a cloth-covered, post screw album. This structure binds individual pages using post screws, allowing the album to be dis-assembled, so pages may be re-ordered, added, or removed. The album structure is perfect for photographs, prints, and scrapbooks.
