In this class, students will have the opportunity to design and print their own poster that engages with the written word and radical typographic design. After an introduction to 20th century avant-garde typography and manifesto writing in the first session, students will have the opportunity to write and workshop their own manifesto. These words will then be turned into polymer plates, and in the second session, students will have the opportunity to letterpress print the manifestos, incorporating multiple design elements and colors, so that by the end of the workshop, each student will be able to take home an editioned set of variegated posters.

Meghan Forbes teaches Czech language, literature, and visual culture at the the University of Texas at Austin. She is the founding editor of harlequin creature, an analog small press imprint.

Kyle Schlesinger is a poet who writes and lectures on typography and artists’ books. Schlesinger’s recent books of poetry include Parts of Speech (Chax Press, 2014), The Do How w/ James Yeary (Great Fainting Spells, 2013), and Picture Day (Electio Editions, 2012). Scholarly works include Letterpress Revolution (Ugly Ducking Presse, 2016) Threads w/ Steve Clay (Granary Books, 2015), Poems & Pictures: A Renaissance in the Art of the Book (Center for Book Arts, 2010). He is proprietor of Cuneiform Press and Associate Professor of Publishing at UHV.
