ExpiredThe 2019 Calendar Poster Project: Hand Crafted Polymer Plate Edition

Jump into the unknown! This workshop is an exploration of past and present technologies. In this two-day letterpress workshop, we will use ink, paper cut-outs, rubylith, and other techniques to craft film negatives by hand for transfer onto polymer plates using a simple photographic method. No computers or computer software knowledge needed. Each participant will design and print a three-color, 2019 calendar in a small limited edition.

Additionally, this workshop covers color management. You will learn how to organize your ideas for producing a multiple color print, how to register a 3-4 color print job (yellow, red, blue and black), how to take advantage of overprinting and increase your color palette by including orange, green and purple. This class is open to all levels of printing/design experience and artistic styles.

Beginners will learn to operate a printing press, from set-up to clean-up and an experienced printer will continue to develop their craft. There will be snacks.

My name is Meredith Miller, and I have been involved with bookbinding and letterpress printing for more than 25 years. After studying printmaking and bookarts with Mary Phelan and Hedi Kyle at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I moved to Austin in 1991 to work for Booklab, where I specialized in restoration and artist’s bindings, under Gary Frost, Priscilla Spitler, and Craig Jensen. I ran the letterpress lab for the University of Texas design department for ten years and concurrently co-owned Roto, a letterpress design business, from 1996-2002. Punchpress began in the summer of 2002. Initially a commercial letterpress business, Punchpress is now a studio dedicated to teaching and working with artists of all disciplines to facilitate their project visions.
