Stiffened Paper Bindings:

Looking for a substitute to cloth or leather covered bindings. Handmade paper is an excellent option. The stiffened paper binding is a simple, efficient, and elegant way to bind pamphlets or small books consisting of just a few signatures. It’s great for manuals, short stories, comics, zines, and manifestos.

Over the course of the day we will learn fundamentals like paper grain, proper folding and cutting techniques, and material choices and apply these to the paper structures. The course will begin with the binding method in its simplest form and advance to a more complex methods.

Students will receive a reference booklet covering the class material to take home, as well as all models they make in class.

Level: This workshop is appropriate for adult students at all levels, including beginners.

I’m Cooper McBean, a musician, artist, handyman, toolmaker, and bookbinder living in Austin, TX.  I’m largely self-taught using scavenged materials and homemade tools, but have been enjoying filling in the gaps in my bookbinding education since discovering ABAC. I’ve been making books for around 30 years, and especially enjoy making tiny books from scraps and trash.
