Drop Spine Box:

Learn to make sturdy boxes for the protection of books or other items: drop spine boxes are constructed of binder’s board and book cloth to fit the object inside. They can be modified, once you understand the technique, to fit a variety of objects.

Students will learn to measure the object and how to work with board, cloth, glue, and the board shear. Students will watch demonstrations on how to carry out each stage of the process and then work themselves to construct their own box.

Level: This class is appropriate for adult students at all levels.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

My name is Meredith Miller, and I have been involved with bookbinding and letterpress printing for more than 25 years. After studying printmaking and bookarts with Mary Phelan and Hedi Kyle at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, I moved to Austin in 1991 to work for Booklab, where I specialized in restoration and artist’s bindings, under Gary Frost, Priscilla Spitler, and Craig Jensen. I ran the letterpress lab for the University of Texas design department for ten years and concurrently co-owned Roto, a letterpress design business, from 1996-2002. Punchpress began in the summer of 2002. Initially a commercial letterpress business, Punchpress is now a studio dedicated to teaching and working with artists of all disciplines to facilitate their project visions.
