Laminated Board Binding:
Originally developed as my “perfect” pocket notebook, this deceptively simple looking binding has a bunch of hidden tricks. It features flexible made endpapers, a breakaway spine with peek-a-boo lining, boards built up from layers of interleaved paper resulting in a surprisingly strong yet flexible book, and the wrapped fore edge which gives protection to the text block and rigidity to the whole structure. This is a book you can shove in your back pocket without a second thought, and one you can make from any old paper you may happen to have lying around.
We will rely heavily on “relative measurement”, using pieces of the book in conjunction with a bench hook and triangle rather than using numerical measurements where possible. This will allow us speed and flexibility as we construct the boards in place. The book is a weird and fairly difficult construction, especially the foredge. The interleaving and glueing is kind of mind bending at points, and this is probably not the best project for absolute beginners.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR
I’m Cooper McBean, a musician, artist, handyman, toolmaker, and bookbinder living in Austin, TX. I’m largely self-taught using scavenged materials and homemade tools, but have been enjoying to fill in the gaps in my bookbinding education since discovering ABAC. I’ve been making books for around 30 years, and especially enjoy making tiny books from scraps and trash.
