Get Creative With Wood & Metal Type

THIS WORKSHOP WILL MEET IN-PERSON AT THE AUSTIN BOOK ARTS CENTER.

Get creative with wood and metal type and make an 8-panel “O” style “Cut-and-Folded Single-Sheet Accordion Book” with visiting book artist Peter Thomas. Participants will explore dynamic and exciting ways to use type for both text and illustration. Type will be printed letterpress, using a split ink fountain to create rainbows of color, with second and third print runs layering type and image, adding visual interest. Students will leave the workshop with their own work and several copies of a book we have made together. No experience necessary.

Level: This class is appropriate for adult students at all levels.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Peter Thomas is a book artist and hand papermaker from Santa Cruz, CA, who works in collaboration with his wife Donna Thomas to create fine press and artist books. Their books combine the precision of the fine press aesthetic with the creativity found in contemporary artists’ books. They are currently traveling the country as “Wandering Book Artists” giving lectures and teaching workshops.
