Long Stitch Cartonera

THIS WORKSHOP WILL MEET IN-PERSON AT THE AUSTIN BOOK ARTS CENTER.*

Libros cartoneros, popular in Latin America, are books made from salvaged cardboard. They can be used as a journal, sketchbook or as a publishing device for poetry or art. Papers folded into signatures are hand sewn with colorful thread into a salvaged cardboard cover and then decorated with paint or collage. Great beginning bookbinding project!

Level: This class is appropriate for adult students at all skill levels.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Jesse Gainer is committed to the democratization of literacy, specifically as practiced through Cartonera book making cooperatives and First Voice (aka #OwnVoice) in publishing. Formerly an elementary school reading teacher, he currently works as an associate professor of literacy education at Texas State University. He is a national committee member for the Tomás Rivera Children’s Book Award. Jesse holds a BA from Earlham College and an MA & PhD from the University of Texas at Austin.
