Fasteners give a book stability, protection from environmental elements, and a feeling of privacy. Inspired by historical books, we will explore designs and functions of book closures, combine them with personal creative ideas and contemporary craftsmanship.
This class includes a brief theoretical introduction to the history of book closures. We will look at historical and contemporary samples and become familiar with a variety of closures through hands-on practice and step-by-step instructions.
Students will make a leather slip cover on which to apply one of the fasteners learned about in class, plus a sample kit for future reference. Students are welcome to bring their own hardware and bindings to the workshop if desired. (No previous bookbinding experience required).
