ExpiredPaste Paper

Explore the colorful and creative world of Book Arts by making paste papers! For hundreds of years paste papers were used by bookbinders as decorative endsheets that added a unique embellishment to the book. But you can create paste papers for an endless variety of applications, including decorative covering for boxes, frames, journals, cards or stationery. Students will learn a bit of the history of paste papers, look at both historical and modern examples, get a lesson on mixing methyl cellulose, and then be set free to create their own set of colorful and unique paste papers.

In the afternoon, students will bind a book using the dried paste papers from the morning session.

Genevieve Pierce comes to the Books Arts by way of Paper and Book Conservation. She received her MS in Library Science with a specialization in Paper and Book Conservation from UT Austin and has worked as a conservator at various UT libraries, at the New York Botanical Gardens, and the American Museum of Natural History. Recently, she opened her private practice – The Microspatula. Genevieve is interested in exploring what information the book conveys in our current context. What does the act of holding and reading a book mean these days? How can the traditional structure of a book be expanded and manipulated, and how can the traditional visual medium of the book be explored? Ultimately, though, she is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of books and paper, and to the continued cultural education on the vitality of the book!
