Also known as Blackletter or Old English, Gothic is the lettering hand of choice for dramatic impact. It can evoke either medieval and fantasy worlds or the most modern expression of energy. When Kate Van Dyke was in the fourth grade, she received a fountain pen and started mixing blue and red ink cartridges to make purple in the school restroom. Much later, she came across a reproduction of a ninth-century manuscript in the public library. She went right out and bought a calligraphy pen, some ink and an instruction book and has been enamored of calligraphy ever since. Kate has studied with some of the best calligraphers of our time, both in the US and abroad. She has taught calligraphy for 29 years, at Laguna Gloria Art Museum (now part of The Contemporary Austin), through Texas calligraphy guilds, and in various continuing ed programs. Kate’s work has been exhibited at many venues in Austin, including the Texas Memorial Museum and several galleries.
