DIY Polymer Plate Production

THIS WORKSHOP WILL MEET IN-PERSON AT THE AUSTIN BOOK ARTS CENTER.

Artists, printers, creatives, free thinkers & visionaries — curious how polymer plates are created? In this workshop you will create a film transparency, develop a polymer plate, and print the image, all in-house. No computer and/or drawing skills needed.

We will use a variety of techniques to craft our film negatives using low tech methods. We will then transfer that imagery onto polymer plates using a simple in-house photographic method. There will be plenty of time to experiment and print your polymer plates. No printing experience needed! (FYI: this workshop is not an in-depth letterpress printing workshop.)

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

My name is Meredith Miller, and I have been involved with bookbinding and letterpress printing for more than 25 years. After studying printmaking and bookarts with Mary Phelan and Hedi Kyle at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, I moved to Austin in 1991 to work for Booklab, where I specialized in restoration and artist’s bindings, under Gary Frost, Priscilla Spitler, and Craig Jensen. I ran the letterpress lab for the University of Texas design department for ten years and concurrently co-owned Roto, a letterpress design business, from 1996-2002. Punchpress began in the summer of 2002. Initially a commercial letterpress business, Punchpress is now a studio dedicated to teaching and working with artists of all disciplines to facilitate their project visions.
