Expired*ONLINE* Design Your Own Patterns for Japanese Stab Binding

In this workshop, students will learn how to design and stitch their own unique stab binding pattern. First, the class will go through creative exercises to generate both abstract and figurative patterns. Design principles to ensure patterns can serve as stable, durable bindings will be addressed. Students will then learn how to use a free online app to work out the stitch order for any pattern. Finally, everyone will construct and stitch one book of their own design.

This workshop requires a kit that will be mailed to registered students on Friday, July 3.

Registration will remain open for locals until Wednesday, July 8th at 5pm. Kits will be available for pick-up at ABAC on Thursday, July 9th from 10am-1pm.

Natalie Freed is a technologist and teacher with a lifelong love for craft and book arts. Her past work has included teaching high school computer science, electronics, and digital fabrication, developing creative curriculum, and making interactive books and electronic textile objects. *Registered students will receive a link to the Zoom meeting in the confirmation email. Students will also receive detailed instructions on how best to participate via Zoom, helpful if one is unfamiliar with the platform.

In addition to a tablet or computer with a reliable Internet connection and a well-lit space in which to work, students will need to provide the following:

[1] Sharp pencil with eraser
[2] Metal ruler or straight edge, 12” minimum length
[3] An awl
[4] Bone folder or some type of scoring tool ( a butter knife works!)
[5] Scissors

Optional: Japanese screw punch or other punch tool, access to a printer.
